The Woodland Boudoir

In early November, I had a lovely Woodland Shoot with Luna.

After doing a few fashion shots, some of which were featured on my blog earlier, we went on to do the "Woodland Boudoir" shoot. The idea for this shoot was to create some artistic images for Luna's portfolio (who is a burlesque performer and singer), showing off her beauty against the backdrop of nature.

Luna has been kind enough to let me share these images, as I would of course never share my customer's boudoir shots without their approval.

Why do people say "never work with children or animals"? I really like family shoots that involve dogs. Babies and dogs are very cute together, because the dogs are usually really protective of the latest little additions to the family. If the shoot is taking place at my customer's home, I tend to wait until the end to get the dog involved. It's rarely easy and takes a bit of patience, but I think it's worth it.

Teenage Cancer Trust

Last week I worked with Teenage Cancer Trust, photographing some of the young people they are helping. Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity that is devoted to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer.

I work with teenagers quite often and have always found that they really love the experience of a photo shoot (especially girls!), so I thought it would be a good idea to offer this to the charity, as something that the girls might enjoy. I visited some of the young people who were unable to go outside first, but for some of the girls who were well enough, we went to a local park for a mini portrait session. What I was completely surprised about was just how positive and fun the girls were. They chatted about shopping, clothes, boyfriends, plans for travel and their conditions and treatment. They seemed to take everything in their stride and their strength and positivity was really inspiring. While some of them have completed their treatment, others are still undergoing their treatment to beat cancer.

Today I have a few photos to share from last Friday's shoot, Strictly Come Dancing style. Ok, so it's nothing to do with the TV show, it's a dance school in London. But, each of these couples are made up of one Pro and one Amateur (Pro Am). I don't think it's that easy to know which is which (apart from the fact that it's same guy reappearing in different outfits!).

I really enjoyed this shoot. It's so fast and so dark during the dance displays, that it is quite challenging from a photographic perspective. Keeps me on my toes!

Well not quite ...BUT Mark, who is a very talented guitarist and used to be in the band Love Affair (yes, that classic tune "Everlasting Love"), said he would love to use this photograph from our recent shoot as a CD Cover. Well not exactly :-) but, I didn't expect to see one of my photos blown up to 12x7metres on the front of a building in South Korea any time soon. When I was asked to do a photo shoot with this Kingston couple a few months ago, they told me that one of the photos would be used on a banner at their wedding in South Korea. What I didn't realise at the time, was that it would be quite this big! They tell me that their big day was wonderful and that the banner photo was a fabulous feature. I'm very happy for them and I feel quite proud as well.

I had a couple of hours free this afternoon after a baby shoot was rescheduled to next week at the last minute. There are lots of things I should or could be doing instead, but I decided to see what I could do with a tray of water, a couple of plastic bags and of course my camera.

Photo Walk - Photos by the attendees

I promised to share some photographs taken by a few of the attendees of my April Photo Walk, The topic was "Spring in Kingston" and we certainly had some lovely spring sunshine on the morning of the walk. Copyright remains with the photographers (thank you guys for letting me use them on my blog).

I specifically want to point out that you don't need a DSLR for the walk. There are some great compact cameras on the market (and even some phones these days that have really decent quality cameras built-in!). I think it's more about getting to know your camera, the settings and the basics of photography, so that you can make the best use of the tools you have available.

First up, Graham Gibson (a recommended local mortgage adviser - http://www.lindon-travers.co.uk/ ), was working with his new Fuji bridge camera and standard-kit lens.

Next, we have Ian Johnson of Pier32 (supplier of ethical promotional clothing - http://www.pier32.co.uk/ ). Ian has a Canon DSLR.

And last, but definitely not least, Sheree Lowe (a hyper organised, efficient Virtual Assistant - http://www.sundowneradmin.com/ ). Sheree has a compact camera (panasonic I think) and it has a wonderful little function that allows her to compose a panoramic shot (in-camera) by taking 2 or more photos that are stiched together (all done in-camera without any work later using photo editing tools).

Photo Walk in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey

This morning, I took to the streets with a small group of local business people who all have one thing in common - that they like taking photos and want to learn more.

We walked and talked about apertures, shutter speeds and ISOs in a very informal setting and lots of photos were taken. Some people had DSLRs with a couple of lenses, while others had just their little compact pocket cameras. But we spent some time getting to know their camera functions and the basic techniques and I think those with compacts were genuinely surprised just how much control they can have. I'm hoping to post some examples taken by the attendees later on the blog.

I had time to take a few pics myself. The sky was such a beautiful blue... worth getting out early for.

This is the second time I've photographed this cute little boy. The first time was before christmas with his cousin (presents for grandparents) and this time was for the grandfather on the other side of the family, as a special birthday present. It's the best compliment when customers invite you back for more photos.

When business people enquire about getting headshots done with me, often, people are not really sure whether they require a studio shoot or whether an outdoor, natural light shoot would better suit their purpose. I offer both options (or a mixture of the two), but as cost is usually a factor, I wanted to post a couple of shots from two recent headshot sessions, to illustrate the different styles.

If you would like me to travel to you with my mobile studio, I charge from £40 for the session (KT and TW postcodes) and £40 per image with a minimum purchase of 3 images. Therefore, packages start at £160. When I travel into London, as I did for the below shots, there is an additional charge to cover time and expenses. With this option, we can use the studio only, or also go outside for some natural light shots. My customers are given a variety of images to choose from and 3 images are included in the package price, though additional images can of course be purchased.

If you can come to me in Kingston, then an outdoor, natural light shoot is a cost-effective option. £50 covers your session fee and one image (though you will have several to choose from). If you require only one image for LinkedIn/Twitter/your website, then this could work for you. Again, you are able to purchase additional images at £40 each if you wish, once you see the results.

While most of the families I work with are 3-5 people, I do sometimes get asked to photograph larger families for special occassions. Last year, I was contacted by a lady who wanted to surprise her mum and dad for an important birthday present. So, I arranged a gift voucher for her.

It was a bit of a chore for my customer to get her mum, dad, siblings and their children all together in the same place, but finally, last month, I went over to Staines to photograph the family - three generations and 15 people in all. I took my mobile studio, as the family were keen on the "white backdrop" style, but because they lived opposite a common, we decided to spend a little bit of time outside too, so that they would have a real variety of photos and styles to choose from.

I work with a fine art printer, who produces high quality photographic prints which are then framed by a local, professional framing company. I was recently asked to take some photographs of Linda Key, the new Publisher at Esprit Magazine - the primary information source for prestige retail beauty in the UK.

My corporate headshot packages include travel to my customers, so I met her at home one morning, with my equipment, and we spent an hour or so chatting about her requirements, taking a few headshots in various poses, with a clothes change in between, so that she would have a bit of variety to choose from.

Today, I've just received a copy of the December magazine in the post, which featured a double-page spread about Linda, as the new Publisher of the magazine. One of the photos I took of her is central to the article, which I've scanned and attached here, as I'm quite proud of that.

A lot of people opt for indoor family photo shoots and when it is so cold outside that's not a bad thing. But, children love to run around outdoors, so, when I have my mobile studio set up at your home, there is always time for a few photos in the garden, especially when there is snow on the ground :)

Family Photography for Christmas

Most of my customers over the last month have been booking family photo shoots with christmas presents in mind. Because I offer both framed products and digital images for purchase, my customers can always find something to suit their needs. I mostly work across Surrey and in particular, the area surrounding Kingston upon Thames, where I am based, but I do travel further. This little family were in London and though the traffic and parking can be a challenge, I really don't mind.

This one is going in a frame for the wall (it's being custom-made for me at the moment by my very good suppliers) and the rest of the shoot has already gone on a CD for the parents to enjoy and share with friends. I really enjoy baby photography and am happy to travel across Surrey to photograph your baby at home.

Newborn Baby Photography

A beautiful little newborn baby boy (two and a half weeks old), who I photographed in Richmond Upon Thames last week. He was awake for most of the shoot, but dozed off towards the end and I thought this shot was just very sweet.

Christmas Gift Vouchers

I've been really busy over the last few weeks with christmas bookings. A lot of people have planned in advance, wanting family photo shoots before christmas, so that they can give the photos as gifts. It's now getting towards the time where I can no longer guarantee framed products in time for christmas, but often, people decide to purchase the digital images from me and provided orders are placed before 20th December, I can then guarantee your CD will be with you, as I will deliver it to your door.

If you haven't planned ahead, then photo shoot gift vouchers could be a good option for you. You could give a photo shoot to your partner - something that you can enjoy together or as a family after christmas. Gift vouchers start from £40 for a mid-week photos shoot or £60 for a weekend shoot, though I can create a voucher for any value, with the remainder then going towards framed photos, digital images or photobooks.

Beautiful weather for outdoor shoots

I know I said it a few weeks ago, but the weather really has been perfect for outdoor shoots. I photographed this family last week and we combined a studio shoot with a small outdoor session with their dog afterwards. It gave the family some great variety to choose from and I know they are going to be really pleased with their order.

This costs £60 and if you then decide you would like to book me for your wedding, this will be refunded to you. Engagement photo shoots can also be bought as a gift voucher - a really nice gift for couples.

A pretty setting and a smile...

...doesn't always make a great photo. This rusty old grill on the wall caught my eye because it was nicely shaded from the sun, which was very bright at the time (not the best light for a portrait). I think it makes a cool backdrop for a teenage portrait and I like the fact that there's not a big smile - it makes the portrait more interesting.

Family Photography Surrey

I photographed this family a couple of weeks ago and as I am just preparing their order, I am thinking what a nice time of year it is to have family photos taken outside. There are lots of great photo locations in Surrey and I like scouting for places in towns I'm not familiar with, or working with an idea that a family has. A lot of my family photography is done indoors with a mobile studio, which does allow me to create beautiful portraits on a clean, white background, but if the natural, outdoor shoot appeals, then now is a perfect time!

Autumn weather is lovely for outdoor photography because the cloudy sky gives a nice diffused light, unlike the harsh light and shadow that is created on a very sunny day. I like working with babies and children outdoors. It's more natural to see young children running around outside, playing football and finding things of interest to pick up. At this time of year, the leaves are starting to turn into really nice colours and are attention-grabbing for most babies.

Photo Cropping can change an image

I photographed the staff at a Kingston firm yesterday and as I have just finished editing the photos, I thought I would share an example of how cropping a photo can change the photo significantly.

These days, the profile photos that I take, are often used on LinkedIn and Twitter profiles. On social networking sites, the profile photo will often be a square and is usually very small, so it is a good idea to have a close-up (and yes, be brave, it's fine to chop the tops of heads off...I have even seen a few crops of half a face that work quite well).

This is the same photo, cropped in two different ways. You can crop photos using the software that came with your camera or by using free software that is readily available. Have a go and see what works.

Corporate Photography in Hampton

While I really enjoy baby and family photography, I also like the variety that corporate work can bring. Last week, I took some photographs at an indian cookery class in Hampton for their website. As well as taking headshots for the business owner, I took a number of "action shots" of the students learning to make some authentic indian dishes. I have been editing the photos today, getting them ready to be delivered and onto the website. Along the way, I've also picked up some tips for indian cookery!

Photography at a Birthday Party on the Thames in Surrey

I was photographing a party on the River Thames on sunday - a surprise party to celebrate two milestone birthdays for a husband and wife. It was a surprise birthday party arranged by their son and daughter, who had been thoughtful enough to hire a professional photographer to cover the event. There were 80 guests on board and as the boat came into Walton to pick us all up, it was raining. But, we were really lucky and the sun came out soon after we boarded and the next 4 hours were beautiful. In fact, the rain only started again as we came back into Walton at the end of a lovely afternoon. I will be working on the photos later this week and having photographed almost all of the guests, I know there will be at least 100-150 photos to be delivered. Preparing these will keep me busy for a few hours :).

Business Photo Shoot in Surrey

I was working with the ladies at the Healing Pond this week, taking some shots for their website and marketing materials. They offer health screening, homeopathic treatments, nutritional advice, allergy testing and lots more. The clinic is far from clinical - it's calm, inviting and cosy. Eleana and Callie are both thoroughly passionate about health - you can just tell that, as soon as they start speaking about their work. It was a pleasure to photograph them.

Family Photographers in Surrey

There are so many photographers in the family market, so how do you go about choosing which one to use?

1) Think about the type of results you are looking for - studio or lifestyle? traditional or contemporary?
2) Ask friends and family for recommendations and search online for photographers in your area.
3) Look at examples of photographer's work and make a short list.
4) Make contact with a few photographers - tell them what you are looking for and ask them about how they work. Clarify pricing if this is not available on their website.
5) Sign up to shortlisted photographers websites/blogs/twitter/facebook to get regular input on their work, as this may help you decide.
5) Perhaps most importantly, your chosen photographer should be someone you feel comfortable with, so that they achieve relaxed, natural results. Often, a chat on the telephone will help you make a judgement on this.

Some things to be aware of:
- Some studios display the best photos from other branches, so the photos you see may not have been taken by your photographer.
-You may be tempted with a low (or even free) session fee, only to find that products are more expensive than you expected. Are sizes and prices available on the website? Be aware that 'prices start from' will be the price of the smallest product.
- Be prepared that if the photographer has done their job, you are likely to want to buy the photos. So it makes sense to set a budget.
- Many photographers do not sell prints. If you want to be able to give prints to family and friends, enquire about digital options.

Business Headshot - What will yours say?

Image is important and your business headshot is often what determines the first impression that new or potential customers have of you. Not only is it important to invest in professional photography (I still see business headshots that look like they have been taken by a friend in a pub), but also it is important to ensure that the image is in line with your business and your brand. If you are providing a business service such as accountancy, you will likely want to be perceived as professional and approachable, whereas a creative designer may wish for a more contemporary, funky look.

A professional photographer should be able to work with your brief to deliver a photograph that shows you at your best and is fit for purpose.
